About the project

When the word “blackout” was suddenly on everyone’s lips, illwerke vkw didn’t want to reassure people. It wanted to explain: what actually happens if the power goes out across Europe? And what happens beforehand, so that it never gets that far?

We took our time over these questions. For just under 27 minutes, the documentary follows electricity through the European interconnected grid, shows the protection plans that kick in during an emergency, and clears up a few stubborn myths. Animations make visible what normally goes unnoticed inside the lines. The title sets the rhythm: 50 hertz is the frequency at which the European power grid oscillates.

Along the way, you learn what an important role Vorarlberg plays when the grid in Europe has to be restored. The film won silver at the Cannes Corporate Media & TV Awards.
